From Cjane....

laverne's sugar cookies:
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs (unbeaten)
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/4 tsp salt
1 cup milk
7-8 cups flour

cream shortening and sugar well.
add eggs and vanilla.
add four, salt, baking powder and soda alternatively with milk.
add enough flour to make a soft dough.
chill for 3-4 hours
(don't skip the chill--makes all the difference
when you are rolling out the dough!)

roll out dough thick
cut with cookie cutter
cook at 350 for about eight minutes.
(better slightly undercooked,
than over cooked
in our opinion.)

glaze:
(as soon as it is legal
for a human to marry food
i am going to marry this glaze)

1 cup confectioners sugar
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
2 tablespoons of water
food coloring (if desired)

stir confectioners sugar, corn syrup and water together
stir in food coloring if desired
after it is stirred
i dip the cooled cookies in the glaze
sprinkle with sugar
and let them sit until firm
(an hour or so).

glaze needs to be stirred regularly
or it will get stiff.

you can also play with the glaze
use milk instead of water
or add a touch of almond extract
or vanilla.

glaze recipe came from here.
